Mechanical ventilation is the processing or replacing of air in any space to provide indoor air quality, replenishing oxygen or removing moisture, smoke, dust, carbon dioxide and unpleasant smells.  Mechanical ventilation can also introduce outside air maintaining air circulation and lower levels of CO2. 

All mechanical ventilation systems need to comply with Australian Standards AS 1668, the standard sets out design requirements for mechanical ventilation depending on the application.
